Everyone knows hygiene is necessary, but did you know it can be especially beneficial during puberty? During puberty, the skin and intimate areas, like the rest of the body, undergo significant changes. Learn that personal hygiene is as vital as a person’s overall appearance.
The webinar “ULSSI, Brigada Eskwela ’22 Teaches Kids Why Good Hygiene Matters“ was created to answer some of the questions that teeneagers have during this overwhelming time in their lives. Brigada Eskwela, UL Skin Sciences and CAA Las Pinas Annex (the personal care business unit of United Laboratories, Inc.) collaborated to help initiate a dialogue concerning adolescent hygiene issues. Together, they came up with two episodes of webinars focused on teaching teens how to properly care for their bodies. The two webinars, hosted by pH Care and Celeteque, mainly focused on skin and intimate area care.
Ms. Alyana Chuatoco, Corporate Branding Group Lead of ULSSI, begins each session by sharing the company’s mission to improve people’s lives through innovative personal care products. She explained that by using these products, people are able to pursue what they truly desire in life because they are not burdened by daily skin and hygiene concerns. As a result, the journey to a life well lived begins with UL Skin Sciences.
If you’re wondering what transpired in the two webinars, here’s a quick rundown.
Caring For The Intimate Area During Teenage Years
One of the crucial aspects of maintaining hygiene is caring for our intimate areas. This concept was the highlight of the Assistant Brand Manager of pH Care, Ms. Grace Benedicto’s webinar session.
In her presentation, she outlined how having the right pH level could help teenagers avoid risks and infections in their private areas. Teens should avoid using soap and water for their feminine area as these might be too harsh. Products with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5which matches the pH level of the feminine area are safe for daily use.
Ms. Benedicto continued her talk and discussed how teens go through both emotional and physical changes during puberty. That is why it is necessary to go beyond the basics and know the science behind hygiene. Teens need to care for their bodies and accept that period and puberty are something everyone will have at some point in their lives.
She encouraged the students to be more open about what they go through during their menstruation. By simply sharing their experiences and feelings, adolescent women can avoid feelings of embarrassment, indifference, and physical constraints during menstruation.
Here are some of the tips she shared before finishing her webinar video:
- Do not wash with soap and water. Use a feminine wash with a safe and neutral pH level on a daily basis (5.5).
- Change your underwear at least once daily.
- Avoid shaving your hair because it can cause bumps and irritation on the skin.
- Opt to wear cotton underwear, to give the skin room to breath.
- Instead of washing the inner parts of your private area, wash the outer parts or the vulva.
- Know that there’s no reason to feel embarrassed whenever you have your period. Remember that it is normal to have menstruation.
Skin Care: Things To Do to Avoid Pimples
Most teenagers get pimples during puberty. For many young people, this can be a humiliating and self-defeating experience. But Ms. Jazz Maniri, Celeteque’s Brand Associate, reminded the students that they should not feel bad if they have acne because having breakouts is normal and happens to 80% of teenagers. During this period, the body is still changing and secreting hormones. She even compared people who did not have acne during puberty to unicorns because it is rare. They are just lucky and blessed not to have pimples during their formative years.
Ms. Maniri stressed how vital ingredients are when choosing skin care products. It is necessary to stick with products that have salicylic acid, AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acids, and Hyaluronic Acid. Salicylic acid helps remove dead skin cells and to avoid inflammation. Alpha hydroxy removes clogs in pores. On the other hand, hyaluronic acid keeps the skin moisturized. Lastly, it is also necessary to check whether a product has Non-Comedogenic properties meaning they won’t cause pore blockages.
Like Ms. Benedicto, she also shared some simple tips:
- Keep your face hydrated by using safe and non-comedogenic moisturizers.
- Never touch or pick at problem areas.
- Watch what you put on your hair. The product that you put on your hair could travel to your skin.
- Avoid acne-causing food. Skimp on eating foods that contain a lot of sugar, oil, and carbohydrates.
The Takeaway
Teens should not feel constrained from excelling in school and going about in their daily life simply because they have acne or menstrual cramps! Puberty should be celebrated rather than feared. Throughout this period of rapid changes, it helps to have some guidance from individuals that have gone through similar experiences in the past. These people may even have advice on which products to use to help them deal with their puberty issues. Know that it is absolutely essential to use safe products to avoid risks. Giving their bodies more attention and time can help improve their overall well-being.
