Brigada Eskwela 23: Making Science Fun from STEM to Skincare

The synergy of STEM and skincare took center stage in the last Brigada Eskwela webinar, thanks to the collaborative effort of CAA Las Pinas Annex, DepEd, and ULSSI (the personal care business unit of United Laboratories, Inc.). As another year unfolded, it brought a fresh opportunity for students to learn more about self-care and science.

Bridging Science and Personal Care

As in previous Brigada Eskwela sessions, Ms. Alyanna Chuatoco, Corporate Branding Group Lead of ULSSI, commenced each session by explaining the company’s mission. This mission revolves around aiding individuals with scientifically-backed personal care solutions. These renowned brands (Myra, pH Care, Celeteque, GynePro and other ULSSI Brands), which you’ve grown up with, empower you to become the best version of yourself. Like the previous webinars, Ms. Chuatoco presented an audio-visual presentation from ULSSI before gracefully passing the floor to the featured speaker.

The Fun and Importance in STEM

The session about STEM was led by Rachel “Rax” Rivera, a brand builder and innovator with a demonstrated history of working in the consumer goods industry. 

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. 

In her talk she emphasized that STEM thinking goes beyond becoming experts in scientific fields. It’s about harnessing the problem-solving skills that underlie these disciplines. And, of course, applying them in real life. For instance, Rivera highlighted that scientists and engineers are not just individuals in hard hats and lab coats; they are problem solvers who create innovative solutions. 

She also emphasized ULSSI’s recognition of the vital role STEM plays in our daily lives and how the company has made significant strides in pioneering innovations through its dedicated team of researchers. Their commitment to simplifying people’s lives is evident in their product lineup. For instance, they responded to a common issue among Filipinos—pimples—by introducing Lactezin, the first acne pill. 

Moreover, ULSSI’s dedication extends to addressing concerns related to teens, including the bodily changes they encounter during menstruation, which led to the development of phCare. Their products were meticulously designed to address different issues faced by Filipinos. This movement shows their commitment to enhancing everyday life through science and innovation.

Skincare for Beginners

The first webinar focused on tailoring body products and skin systems for Filipinos, while the second video was about integrating these products into daily skincare routines.

The second part of the program was hosted by Ms. Berna Fernandez, the Brand Lead of Celeteque, who shared her passion for teaching through her participation in Brigada Eskwela. Her engaging presentation revolved around addressing common skin issues, particularly acne, by identifying various contributing factors such as stress, diet, hormonal changes during puberty, and unpredictable weather conditions.

Ms. Fernandez emphasized the importance of adopting a smart skincare routine, focusing on maintaining moisture balance and selecting non-comedogenic products. She encouraged young individuals to follow the three essential steps: cleanse, tone, and moisturize, highlighting their simplicity and effectiveness.

For those grappling with more severe acne problems, she recommended exploring products containing BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) and PHA (Polyhydroxy Acid) ingredients as potent allies in combating breakouts. Additionally, she provided practical guidance on addressing dry skin and dark spots by promoting healthier skin through simplified skincare practices and lifestyle adjustments.

To conclude her informative presentation, she treated the audience to an uplifting Celeteque commercial. The commercial revolved around addressing skin impurities. It also underlines the importance of deep cleansing over surface cleaning.
