Empowered Beauty Towards Sustainability: One Step at a Time

The word “sustainability” has become more than just a buzzword that key figures and opinion leaders use for clout. It has evolved into a collective goal for communities so that future generations will have resources that can enrich their lives, seeking to promote environmental awareness, instill practical eco-friendly habits, and ensure that individuals have the right venues to participate.

After all, even if the Earth is abundant in resources, these are not infinite. Local businesses should step up their efforts to take care of the environment and implement sustainability measures to benefit their employees, customers, and the communities they serve.

UL Skin Sciences recognizes the role of environmental sustainability in helping achieve its goal of empowered beauty for Filipinos across the country. In response to this call, UL Skin Sciences has initiated various activities that aim to boost awareness of environmental sustainability and promote practices that can positively impact people at the individual and communal levels.

Making Environmental Sustainability Fun and Fulfilling

True to its core values, UL Skin Sciences initiated a series of employee activities highlighting the principles of fun, teamwork, and environmental sustainability. Employees practiced principles of circular economy by giving new life to their old clothes, bags, books, accessories, and household items.

An employee donation drive was held to lessen waste that could go to landfills and promote the reuse and longevity of their personal items. These items were sold during a fun, interactive selling session, with proceeds gained from this event being donated to the Giving Resource and Opportunities to Women (GROW) program of Project PEARLs, a Philippines-based not-for-profit organization. Meanwhile, unsold items were then donated to Caritas Manila’s Segunda Mana program.

Fun challenges were also conducted at the UL Skin Sciences office to foster camaraderie and friendly competition. Each completed challenge, which included going meat-free once a week, segregating waste, printing on scratch paper, or carpooling, walking, or riding a bike to the office, allowed employees to earn raffle entries to win exciting prizes. These tasks boosted employees’ motivation to adopt environmentally friendly lifestyle habits and enhance their awareness on every small step they can take to contribute to the bigger goal.

Breaking Ground, Gaining Wisdom Through Tree-Planting Efforts

For UL Skin Sciences, environmental sustainability is not limited to the four walls of the office or the comfort of home. In fact, this is best practiced and applied in nature itself, where you get to enjoy the benefits of nature in uplifting one’s well-being.

As part of its efforts to advocate environmental sustainability, UL Skin Sciences held a tree-planting activity last November 15, 2024, at the Mount Purro Nature Reserve. Located in Antipolo, Rizal, this eco-park served as the perfect backdrop for over 70 employees who got to plant 500 lawaan trees.

They also enjoyed a scenic guided forest hike and river walk and attended talks facilitated by members of the community within the area. These discussions increased their knowledge about environmental stewardship and how even the smallest of changes to their daily routines can impact nature as a whole.

Small and Subtle Steps Can Make a Big Difference

Promoting environmental sustainability practices into business operations may seem complicated at first, but this is truly where the rubber meets the road. These are the stepping stones for larger-scale initiatives that can set the stage for widespread positive change in the industry.

For instance, UL Skin Sciences is also actively working to reduce plastic waste that threatens to spill over from landfills and contaminate surroundings. In compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act of the Philippines or Republic Act No. 11898, UL Skin Sciences built and implemented its in-house Extended Producer (EPR) Program.

The organization works with three plastic waste diverters in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to recover and reuse plastic that can eventually leak into nature.

This program also allows UL Skin Sciences to support communities in Negros Occidental by way of providing jobs for informal waste collectors and advocating for legislation on proper waste management.

When the program started in 2023, UL Skin Sciences was able to divert 196 tons of plastic waste from landfills. In 2024, this number increased to 377 tons, proving that as businesses expand, our responsibility to the communities we serve grows alongside it.

UL Skin Sciences, home to brands like Myra, pH Care, and Celeteque, believes that environmental sustainability goes hand-in-hand with promoting empowered beauty. By upholding these two ideals, UL Skin Sciences not only helps Filipinos look and feel their best inside and out, but also fosters a sense of responsibility, sustainability, and awareness to take care of the planet and ensure that the next generations have the tools they need to make their lives meaningful.
